As with any movie that Tim Burton appends his name to, CABIN BOY possesses a distinctive flavor -- visually impressive, and containing elements of fantasy and mythology alongside the ordinary and commonplace. Inspired by such diverse sources as CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS, the SINBAD movies, and PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE, CABIN BOY is perhaps the closest any American film has come to the black absurdism of Monty Python - it has much in common with, in particular, Terry Gilliam’s JABBERWOCKY(1977). In both films the hero of the piece has a naivete that borders on complete idiocy, and travels through various fantastic situations, during which they become the butts of sadistic, directorial misfortune. Former Late Night With David Letterman and Saturday Night Live performer Chris Elliott plays a not-so-bright foppish dandy who's just out of finishing school. When he mistakenly boards a ship called The Filthy Whore and accidentally knocks the ship's current cabin boy overboard, he becomes the much-hated replacement. The film features cameos by Andy Richter and David Letterman himself.
