AFS ESSENTIAL CINEMA:
COMING OF AGE IN GLOBAL CINEMA
EVERY TUESDAY IN SEPTEMBER, 7PM ALAMO DOWNTOWN
Coming of age is a young person's formal transition from adolescence to adulthood. The age at which this
transition takes places varies in society, as does the nature of the transition, which can be a simple legal
convention or a symbolic rite of passage. Often in films, such a change is associated with the age of sexual
maturity (mid-adolescence), but the common denominator in all coming of age films is a young character
or characters who, by the end of the story, have matured in some way, usually through the acceptance of
responsibility. The Austin Film Society is proud to present a global cross-section of coming-of-age films,
some funny, some touching and some tragic. All, of course, revel in some degree of humiliation, and the
grave insinuation that the decisions made in this brief moment in time will affect the rest of the characters’
lives.
