Dario Argento's PROFONDO ROSSO (DEEP RED) is a touchstone among giallo thrillers. It took the somewhat hokey Edgar Wallace inspired mechanical thriller plotline and wired it into the BLOW UP Style metacinema. The resulting explosion is still raining blood down upon us to this day. But despite its name, DEEP RED is much more than blood and gore, it's Argento's most ingenious film. It is engineered to shock viewers out of their seats, and it will. But it's also well paced, with an appealing male/female investigating team played by David Hemmings and Daria Nicolodi. When DEEP RED emerged as a hit in the '70s there was no shortage of gushing blood on screen. It became a hit and a classic because of its subtlety and timing. Featuring a classic musical score by the Italian electro-prog masters Goblin.
