PSYCH-OUT
JULY 8, MIDNIGHT, $1, DIR. RICHARD RUSH, 1968, 35MM, 100 MIN, NR
Wildly entertaining portrait of the 'love children' of San Francisco's Summer Of Love. Susan Strasberg stars as a 17 year old deaf runaway who falls in with a band of fun-loving hippies led by Jack Nicholson (as Stoney), who help her find her drug casualty brother (Bruce Dern at his twitchiest). Along the way she learns about living, loving and highly dangerous chemicals. PSYCH-OUT, made by Richard Rush for producer Dick Clark, is by far the best hippiesploitation movie. Other movies felt hopelessly square and tin-eared but Rush told the story in a fresh and exciting way. With The Seeds, The Strawberry Alarm Clock and an all-star supporting cast including biker movie king Adam Roarke, Dean Stockwell and Max (THE MACK) Julian. With the best drug freak-out sequences ever (greatly abetted by Austinite Gary Kent's special effects wizardry) and a surprising amount of violent action. Mind-blowing photography by Laszlo Kovacs. (Lars)
We are thrilled to announce that Gary Kent, actor, stunt-man and special effects master, will be joining us to talk about the making of PSYCH-OUT!
Check out his essential autobiography, "Shadows & Light: Journeys With Outlaws in Revolutionary Hollywood." He will be signing the book at Book People on Wednesday, July 15 at 7pm. At that event Gary will be joined by his fellow "junkyard gang" members from PSYCH-OUT, Don Jones and 'Bud' Cardos, both of whom are also well established filmmakers, as well as other special guests.
