Consensus in fan circles is virtually unanimous. The best STAR TREK film to date is the second installment, THE WRATH OF KHAN. Whereas STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE’s bloated budget and plodding pacing flatlined with audiences, KHAN charged out of the gates with an epic revenge duel storyline between an aging and vulnerable Kirk and one of his lifelong enemies, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán).

J.J. Abrams comes to Star Trek in much the same way KHAN director Nicholas Meyer did in 1982. Both were not steeped in the legacy of the show before coming to their projects. They also both wanted to be respectful to the tradition, but needed to deliver a fresh reimagining of the franchise to make it relevant to young viewers again. In fact Abrams has named STAR TREK II as one of his main influences for the new film.

I say that KHAN is the best of the series... to date. Based on what I have seen thus far, however, I am holding out strong hope that KHAN, the undisputed champ of the STAR TREK movies, will be trumped by Abrams’ reboot.
