AFS Essential Cinema: PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE
Rated PG; 92min; Director:Brian De Palma (1974)
Location: Alamo South Lamar
Presented by the Austin Film Society
Often dismissed as a blood & sex-obsessed misogynist or an empty film stylist, Brian De Palma actually revealed a striking, provocative, free-wheeling, politically subversive sensibility in the films of his early career. This series will focus on the first eight years of his career. Curated by Bryan Poyser.
The Phantom of the Opera gets a ghoulish glam rock update in this instant-cult-classic story of a songwriter who seeks revenge on the record producer who steals his music, the woman he loves and his soul. Longtime De Palma background player William Finley gets a chance to truly shine as the horribly disfigured, steel-toothed Phantom, and "Rainbow Connection" songwriter Paul Williams clearly relishes his role as the diminutive and possibly Satanic music mogul Swan.
