Let's face it: punk scared people. Parents believed the stuff on Quincy, and record label mogul's didn't understand how to market it at all. In order to break into the mainstream, the feelings of isolation and discord with the corporate world would somehow have to undergo a radical transformation that made it more palatable for that very world it tried to rebel against: enter the 'new wave.'
Video killed the radio star, and musicians were able to look pretty while they sang about how tainted love could be and synthesizers and keyboards replaced the guitar as the defining sound of the day. Soon the doors were opened for all of us, no matter how sheltered, to start rocking out and crying at the same time. If only we'd closed those doors before the emo kids moved in...
We've put together a killer show with everything from the Talking Heads to the Cure and the Police, with the one-hit wonders and the legends of rock all feeding off of each other in a wonderfully independent flourescent-hued flash of a future that still feels like it's on the way even though it's all from 20 years ago. We'll melt with you this April.
