This Just In: The New York Times' Manohla Dargis Loved Loved Loved It! Read the review here.

If you love Texas and/or movies, this locally produced and entirely self-financed 1979 feature from late Austinite Eagle Pennell is just plain crucial. The story is sparse and sincere, following two hapless big-time nobodys who always seem to live beyond their means and behind their dreams. Filled with all the dust and dry wit of the finest ‘70s independent cinema, it’s impossible to understand why THE WHOLE SHOOTIN’ MATCH isn’t considered a genuine classic. Robert Redford liked it so much that he started a festival called Sundance to highlight small films like THE WHOLE SHOOTIN' MATCH that lacked proper distribution.

“...One of the best examples of regional American cinema. It was financed and made totally in Texas by Texans. It won’t turn up in neighborhood theaters and may never be on TV, but it creates characters that are such ornery, dreaming, hopeless and precious failures that you can’t help loving them.” - Roger Ebert, 1979
