Guts didn�t exist until Herschell Gordon Lewis invented them. Sure, by 1963, horror movies had existed for decades, but it took one enterprising Floridian filmmaker to realize that scary films could be made a hundred times more stomach-churning with just a splash of red. Hell, why not gallons of it? When BLOOD FEAST debuted that year, theaters were packed, audiences turned green and a bold new genre was created: the gore film.
Short on slick production but high on violence, BLOOD FEAST tells the story of Fuad Ramses, a cannibalistic maniac bent on a hostile Egyptian supernatural takeover. The acting is either record-breakingly over-the-top or dazzlingly wooden, but the real stars here are entrails and buckets of human goo! Featuring an amazing reading-lines-off-the-furniture performance by Playboy model Connie Mason in her big screen debut, and the history-making, scenery-chewing chops of Mal Arnold as Ramses! Whoa whoa whoa!
Lewis� next feral flesh-ripper was 1964�s 2000 MANIACS, in which a goodtimey backwater Southern community celebrates its centennial anniversary by horrifically dispatching some wayward city folk. This one was a huge step forward in both storytelling and brutality, and features wild heartlessness that's still innovative by even modern shock film standards! This is the most mammoth Alamo Drafthouse horror event EVER!!
