We’ll be watching Smokey and the Bandit, Sharky’s Machine and White Lightning.

The following morning, we kick off a cross country scavenger hunt, with competitors driving from Atlanta to Texarkana, just like in Smokey and the Bandit, where we will have a semi-truck full of Coors and a drive-in screening of the film at nightfall.

Scavenger Hunt contestants will Check-in at 8 AM on the morning of August 15 at the Starlight drive-in in Atlanta to receive the rules and list of items for the scavenger hunt. Please note, this is not a speed challenge. Please drive safely and obey the rules of the road. The cross-country scavenger hunt is limited to a maximum of 30 teams. The Films of Burt-athon 2007:

Feature #1: Smokey and the Bandit
1977, dir. Hal Needham, PG, 96 min.
Bandit and Cledus are two truck-driving good ol’ boys who accept a dare from Atlanta big-shots Big and Little Enos (Pat McCormick and Paul Williams) to pick up a truckload of Coors from Texas and return it to them within 28 hours. Sherriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason) and his recently left-at-the-altar son Junior (Mike Henry) will stop at nothing to thwart this plan. Everyone knows that Star Wars was the highest grossing movie of 1977. Less known, however, is that a very different film that was nipping at its heels all summer long. The #2 grossing film of 1977 was good-ol’ boy comedy classic Smokey and the Bandit. Pontiac Firebird stock rose to new heights, moustaches were in and Burt Reynolds was at the absolute top of his game.

Feature #2: Sharky's Machine
1981, dir. Burt Reynolds, R, 122 min.
You can't roll a Burt Reynolds triple feature at the Starlight and not highlight Sharky's Machine, filmed entirely in Atlanta and featuring numerous city landmarks and iconic buildings. Burt Reynolds was getting restless with the good ol' boy screen image he cultivated in Smokey & the Bandit and numerous car-chase flicks of the mid-to-late 1970s, and this brutal 1981 thriller presented the actor with an interesting change of pace. Reynolds directed the film as well, and there was a lot at stake for him both personally and professionally, so Sharky's Machine--based on a gutsy novel by William Diehl--has an urgent, no-nonsense quality that lifts it above most thrillers of the era. The plot follows a demoted Atlanta vice cop (Reynolds) who pursues a personal vendetta against a crime boss (Vittorio Gassman) after falling in love with a stunning beauty (Rachel Ward) from the mobster's stable of high-priced prostitutes. Sharky's Machine has amazing performances, thrilling stunts, and non-stop action. Your price of admission is completely justified with this one movie.
Feature #3: White Lightning
1973, dir. Joseph Sargent, PG, 101 min.
Burt Reynolds is Gator McKlusky, a moonshine runner who wages war against corrupt police officials in this two-fisted, four-wheeling action extravaganza. With adrenaline-pumping car chases, bone-crunching brawls and terrific acting by an all-star cast, this early entry in the Burt Reynolds canon is considered by many to be the greatest good ol' boy film of all time.
Please note, the screening of Smokey and the Bandit in Texarkana is free. There is a charge of $8.50/person in advance ($10 at the door) for the Burt-athon triple feature in Atlanta (the standard admission charge at the Starlight Drive-In). Pre-1990 Pontiac Firebird drivers get a special admission price of $6/car as well as admission to the Dewar's VIP tent and complimentary reserved VIP parking.
