The Film:
A sleeper hit when released in 1986, Stand by Me is based on Stephen King's novella The Body (from the book Different Seasons); but it's more about the joys and pains of boyhood friendship than a morbid fascination with corpses. The film follows four boys ages 12 and 13 (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell) who take an overnight hike through the woods near their rural town to find the body of a young man who's been missing for days. Their journey includes a variety of scary adventures (including a ferocious junkyard dog, a swamp full of leeches and a treacherous leap from a train trestle), but it's also a time for personal revelations, quiet interludes and the raucous comradeship of best friends. Stand By Me is delightfully entertaining from start to finish, thanks to the rapport among its young cast members and the timeless, universal themes of friendship, family and the building of character and self-esteem.
The event:
Make sure to get plenty of sleep the night before, because this is going to be an amazing, full-tilt Stand By Me experience.
The following is a sampling of activities that will be happening throughout the day on July 28. We'll be posting more information about the various daytime and nighttime activities along with a complete schedule, parking information and maps here on the website, so check back soon!
- I.F.O.C.E. (International Federation of Competitive Eating) sanctioned blueberry pie eating contest. World champion eaters will be converging on Brownsville Oregon to reenact (minus the projectile vomiting) the famous pie eating contest from the film in the first annual World Championship Blueberry Pie Eating Competition.
- We are currently in discussions with Corey Feldman to attend the screening. Check back here for confirmation of this appearance.
- 'Find the body' scavenger hunt
- Self-Guided tour of movie locations (we'll have maps available online and in local businesses around town). Several locations will also be hosting added attractions, such as Hot Wheels races, a beer tasting and live '50s music at the Brownsville Saloon.
- Cruise-in on Spaulding Avenue. Spaulding Avenue was one of the main locations from the film. The parking spaces on this street will be reserved for vintage '50s vehicles only.
- 50s sock-hop before the film.
- Last but not least, there will be an official after-party following the movie at the Brownsville Saloon (Irby's Pool hall from the film) with live music sponsored by Dewar's White Label.
Here's the official rundown of events from the Brownsville coordinators themselves:
